Grinding Machine

Grinding machine is used to finish the work pieces. Like other machining processes, grinding is also a process of removing metal, but during grinding process comparatively very small volume of metal is removed to bring the work piece to good finishing size. 


Another purpose of grinding is to raise the standard of finish and improvement in accuracy without increase in cost and loss of time. The effect of above changes is to raise the quality of engineering products and specially to raise the quality and accuracy of machine tools which are further used to produce various other jobs in industries.

CONSTRUCTION

Bed: 

The upper surface of the bed generally has the shape of inverted tee. There are the ways to carry the table along the base of the bed.

Wheel head and slide: 

In case of universal grinding machines it is mounted on an intermediate turn table slot so that it may be swiveled and fed at any angle. In case of plane machine, the head is fixed and moves perpendicular to the table.

Spindle: 

The spindle is the most important element and the accuracy of the grinding surface depends on this. The grinding and spindle of high class grinding machine should be exceptionally of fine piece of machine tool construction.

Table: 

The table is carried on the ways at the top of the front and carries the work head and tail stock. Most of the tables are operated hydraulically. Automatic lengthwise travel of table is achieved and length of stroke and reversal of table is achieved by adjustable trips which operate the reversing lever.

Work head: 

The spindle and the center are locked by the plunger which fits into the flange of the pulley at the left hand side end. The work carried on the dead center is driven by the pin projecting from the driving plate which is attached to the right hand pulley unit rotating on its own bearings and screwed to the spindle nose. To convert the machine for internal work or face plate work, the driving plate unit is screwed off and replaced by chuck.

Tail stock: 

The tail stock which supports the outer end of the work is similar to lathe tail stock except that the barrel, instead of being screw operated, is actuated by a spring.
