Carpentry Shop

In this shop we will study the materials and the tools used in carpentry shop. The major raw material used in carpentry shop is wood and the other helping materials are nails, screws, paints and glues. 
The wood is available in the market in different shapes and sizes. The processes done in wood work are sawing, marking, turning, and chiseling etc. Wooden furniture’s, doors, windows, and the pattern are generally made in carpentry shop.

WOOD

Wood is available in nature in the form of trees. Useful part of tree is cut and is used for carpentry work. Trunk is the most important part of the tree.

TIMBER

The wood obtained from fully grown trees is cut and is prepared for engineering purposes. This wood is known as timber. Timber also have three forms, when it is cut in the form of a complete tree then it is termed as stationary, after cutting the tree in the form of logs it is rough form and after sawing it to market size it is commercial timber.

Timber has following advantages over the other material:
1. Easy to work on it by the help of different tools for achieving the required specifications.
2. Lighter in weight in comparison to other available materials but having the required strength.
3. It is cheaper as compared to other raw material and easily available.
4. Good response to polishing and painting.
5. Very suitable for doors, windows and furniture work, because these items involve lot of joints and timber can be easily converted into joints.
6. Sound proof in nature and good resale value.
7. Good strength.
8. Timber is a poor conductor as such it is preferred in the construction of the houses.

TYPES OF WOOD:

Hard wood has closed structure, heavy in weight, dark in color, more durable and is difficult to work on it, annual rings are not distinct and has good tensile strength. Whereas the soft wood has less weight, less durable and is easy to work on it. Soft wood catches fire soon as compared to hard wood, annual rings are quite distinct.

PLYWOOD:

It consists of more than three layers. Middle layer is called core which is thick and not of good quality. The top and bottom are called as face plys which is glued on the core at top and bottom. The grains of adjacent layers are kept perpendicular to each other which prevents plywood from damage. 

Some of the advantages:
1. Lighter in weight and easy to work.
2. Can be used for decorating the furniture as well as houses.
3. It is also available in bigger sizes.
4. Possesses better strength than solid wood of same thickness.
